How to choose the right serum for your skin?

Each skin type is different, and hence they have different needs too. While some people may require extreme hydration, some might be looking to control excessive oil or sebum production. As we all know, skincare products need to be chosen based on our skin type. This fundamental is no different in the case of facial serums as well.

What is a serum, and how do we use it?

Serums are typically products that consist of active ingredients that target different skin concerns. They are generally light in consistency for the skin to absorb them easily. A serum isn’t equivalent to a moisturizer, nor does a moisturizer do the job of a serum.

Most of the serums in the market are usually packed and loaded with active ingredients like Vitamin C, Retinol, Hyaluronic Acid, etc., which are highly beneficial for the skin. They do not clog pores as most of the serums are oil-free and light in consistency. Thus, in the long run, serums will improve the skin texture and keep the skin healthy.  Facial serum can be incorporated into your day or night regime. After cleansing and toning, apply your serum and then top it off with moisturizer.

How to choose serums based on your skin type?

For that, understanding your skin type is the first step. Analyze your skin and see what it is that needs to be addressed.  If you are someone who doesn’t know your skin type, do not worry. We have got it sorted for you. Cleanse your face and wait for a few minutes. If you see no particular change, you have normal skin. If you find that your face has become shiny, then you have oily skin. And, if your skin feels dehydrated and dry, yours is dry skin. If you notice your T-zone is shiny and the rest of the face normal, you have a combination skin type.

Ingredients

Now that you have analyzed our skin type, what is your concern? Each ingredient used in serum has different purposes. Once we comprehend the skin concern, we can choose the serum based on it.

Anti-acne serum

If you are someone who struggles with acne and acne marks, then serums that contain Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide or tea tree extra would work the best for you. All these ingredients help in tackling stubborn acne and making your skin look clear. Salicylic Acid helps in getting rid of blackheads and whiteheads as well. So, if you are someone with oily skin, serums that contain Salicylic Acid are something that you can consider buying. Niacinamide is an ingredient that aids in reducing scars, and hence it works best on acne marks.

Hydrating serum

If hydration and glow are your concerns, then you should start using serums which contain Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid has excellent nourishing and hydrating properties. Also, it improves the signs of aging.

Vitamin C

Apart from these, Vitamin C is a really great ingredient that reduces pigmentation and boosts the glow of your skin. If you struggle with hyperpigmentation and dull skin, a Vitamin C serum would work wonders for you. Vitamin C serums are great for almost all skin types and can be used by everyone who wants to get rid of hyperpigmentation and sun tan.
